Friday, Oct. 3 from 8-10 a.m., Hitz-Rhodehamel Nature Preserve, 1336 Freeman Ridge Road, Nashville. Free event. Attendees should plan for the walk to be on a moderately rugged path with steep inclines in this actively managed forest. Please bring binoculars, wear sturdy shoes, and clothing that will protect from ticks and other biting insects. Insect repellant and drinking water will be provided.

Birds are all around us. We see them in our yards, in parks, and flying in the sky. But do you recognize their calls? Their flight patterns? Join Allisyn Gillet, IDNR state ornithologist, and Judi Brown, coordinator of the Let the Sun Shine In-Indiana Project for a guided walk in the Hitz-Rhodehamel Nature Preserve. Allisyn will provide birdwatching tips and information about the birds that are heard and spotted during the walk.

The Hitz-Rhodehamel Woods, owned by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), is a large, high-quality forest. This preserve features chestnut oak forests on its dry ridges and white oak forests in the steep ravines. It is an important part of the Brown County Hills large forest block. TNC acquires and manages land in this area to help protect the forest, as well as the forest interior birds. Information on the Forestry for the Birds program will be available for participants.

Come to the Nature Center for an up close and personal look Indiana’s most venomous and most misunderstood snake! Learn about the history of timber rattlesnakes, including how this animal became an American symbol in the late 1700s on the Gadsden Flag. Learn how over a million visitors a year safely share the state park with these animals. We’ll also discuss venom, how it works and is delievered, and how Indiana’s venomous snakes compare to the rest of the world! At the end, we will feed the timber rattlesnake a live mouse. Please be aware this program involves live animals. A live snake feeding may not be suitable for all guests, particuarly children. Guests will have an opportunity to leave the program before the feeding, if they choose to do so.

Exploring Color, Meditative Flow, and Ancient Technique

Join Indianapolis artist Hannah Hadley for a hands-on marbling workshop that brings the mesmerizing art of marbling to both paper and fabric. Rooted in centuries-old tradition, marbling is a playful and meditative process where color dances on the surface of water before being transferred to paper or cloth—each piece entirely one of a kind.

In this class, you’ll learn the fundamentals of marbling and create your own vibrant marbled paper and fabric samples. You’ll explore color mixing, pattern-making techniques, and how to work with different materials to achieve beautiful, flowing results.

Hannah brings her deep love of craft and connection to the natural world into every class. As a practicing artist and experienced teacher in sewing, natural dyeing, marbling, and felting, she’ll guide you in discovering how marbling can be both joyful and grounding.

And a play project.

Starring Broadway actress Jill Tasker

Nearly a century after the passing of Indiana impressionist pioneer Theodore Clement Steele, his legacy endures through his art and the historic site he and his wife Selma created. Steele, trained in Munich and celebrated nationwide, left behind a career of painting portraits of the elite to embrace his love of nature in Brown County, Indiana. In 1907, he and Selma settled in the wilderness near Belmont, where they built the “House of the Singing Winds.” This sanctuary became a hub for art, inspiring the T.C. Steele State Historic Site and drawing artists and visitors to the region.
The Steeles’ perseverance through challenges helped establish the early 1900s Brown County Art Colony, a regional art movement that brought artists, crafts, and tourism to the area. The 1920s marked a golden era for the colony, with the House of the Singing Winds at its heart. To honor this legacy, Indiana artists C.W. Mundy and Rita Spalding embarked on a three-year project to capture the Steeles’ world. Through research and artistic exploration, they recreated the spirit of the 1920s, producing a moving collection that celebrates the beauty and history of the Steeles’ life and work.

On October 4, the amazing collection goes on exhibit. Paintings by Steele himself will be included. Visitors will be taken back in time, almost 100 years ago. The works by Mundy and Spalding will be offered for sale with part of the proceeds to benefit the
Brown County Art Gallery Foundation as it enters its 100 th year.
Paint and canvas are not the only way to tell their story. Selma was a former teacher and city dweller who had studied design, but when she moved to Brown County, she had to become much more. She developed into a landscaper, beekeeper, produce
grower, employer, home supervisor, social secretary, and marketing manager. She became an advocate for the poor residents who surrounded their property. And she eventually became the caretaker for her husband, sister, and eventually the huge estate they had created. It was not what she was prepared for and she wrote about her journey in a book called “The House of the Singing Winds”. It is from this book and additional
research that author Lyn Letsinger-Miller created a dialogue to give Selma voice to her tale. And what a tale it is.
Broadway actress Jill Tasker will portray Steele’s wife in a one act play called “Selma and the Painter.” While the 20s were the heyday, Selma’s story is set in the 1940s following the great Depression and a world war in the future. It is a story of bravery,
determination and love.
There will be two performances on the October 4th Grand Opening Night which includes the exhibit, the play and food
and wine are $45.00 per person. Play performances will be at 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Doors open at 5:00.
Reservations are required with visitors to select performance time. Seating is limited.

The Go BikeIN Mountain Bike Workshop is your introduction into the world of mountain biking. This workshop not only gives you a chance to hit the trail on one of our 13 demonstration bikes, it also provides skills lessons from our trained mountain bike instructors. After spending time learning these valuable skills and getting comfortable on the bike, our instructors will then lead you on a ride along one of Brown County State Park’s renowned mountain bike trails. This will be a 3 hour workshop that gives you and your family a great start to being a mountain biker.

Please be aware this is a beginner level class, prioritizing those who do not own mountain bikes. Bikes are not available for rental. A $20 per person donation is suggsted, but not required, for class participants.

Meet in the Nature Center parking lot.

Children: This frame size is 13′ -14″ for those between 4’10” – 5’2″ in height. There are four available, two for girls and two for boys.

Adult Small: This frame size is 15″ – 16″ for those 5’2″ – 5’6″ in height. There are three available.

Come enjoy autumn’s colors with the Goat Conspiracy Sanctuary and Little Spring Studio! This three-hour event includes a tour of the Goat Conspiracy, a plein air watercolor workshop, and plant-based snacks to enjoy al fresco.

This class is geared towards beginner and first-time watercolor painters. Interested in bringing a younger artist? Ages 7+ are welcome with an accompanying guardian.
